Midthunder was born in Shiprock, New Mexico and is of the Assiniboine tribe of Fort Peck. Her entire childhood living within Santa Fe where her mother worked at a casting company and attended at the Academy for Technology and the Classics. Amber is from a Native American family on her dad's side. Both are members of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. Amber's mother is an adopted. Amber therefore has unidentified the family tree. Prey features a largely Native American cast, including Dakota Beavers as Naru's brother and Jhane Meyers who was Comanche and Blackfeet and provided an extensive amount of advice to the film. Coco, the adorable animal actor who portrays Sarii was selected for her unique breed of dog, that of the American Dingo.
